Greece amps up security at refugee camps amid fears of a rise in radical Islamists

In the wake of the deadly attack on Israel by Hamas, Greek intelligence has stepped up its security measures at the country’s refugee camps in response to fears of a rising number of radical Islamists.

Greece has also raised its national alert level to Code 4, which is just below the highest level.

Voice of America has reported that with tens of thousands of mostly Arab migrants living in the camps, Greek intelligence officials fear that the radicalisation of these elements could lead to terror attacks, such as the recent shooting of two Swedish citizens in Brussels on Monday and the stabbing of a teacher in the French town of Arras this month.

Greece’s migration and asylum minister, Dimitris Keridis, has declared that the situation in the camps is “under control.”

Greece has supported Israel in its effort to expel Hamas, but it has also warned Israel to guard against a humanitarian catastrophe spreading to neighbouring countries and Europe.
