Beloved Greek Orthodox priest Father Nektarios Zorbalas passes away

·

Revered Greek Orthodox priest and tireless humanitarian, Father Nektarios Zorbalas, passed away today after a period of declining health.

Best known for founding one of Sydney’s longest-running soup kitchens, Father Nektarios began his mission 33 years ago at St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Marrickville. When he was later appointed to Sts Constantine and Helen in Newtown, he brought the initiative with him – turning it into a lifeline for thousands of vulnerable people over the years.

Week after week, he could be found welcoming strangers and quietly restoring dignity to the forgotten. His work went far beyond the pulpit. He led with his hands, his heart, and a fierce sense of compassion that left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

In recent years, the soup kitchen continued under the guidance of Father Nicholas Stavropoulos and a team of dedicated volunteers, with Father Nektarios offering his blessing.

As news spread of his ailing health, hundreds of faithful from across Sydney visited Father Nektarios in his final days. Many came bearing stories – of prayers answered, of comfort offered in dark moments. The outpouring of love reflected the profound spiritual impact he had on countless lives.

His passing leaves a deep void in the community, but also a legacy built on humility, mercy, and love in action – a legacy that will live on in every meal served and every life uplifted.

A Trisagion service for Father Nektarios will be held on Sunday, 27 July 2025 at 6pm at the Cathedral of the Annunciation of our Lady in Redfern, followed by an all-night vigil during which he will lie in state for mourners to pay their respects.

His funeral will be held on Monday, July 28, at the Holy Cathedral of the Annunciation of Our Lady in Redfern, Sydney. A Divine Liturgy will begin at 7am, followed by the Funeral Service at 10.30am, presided over by Archbishop Makarios.
