Athens student parade honours national anniversary

·

Students filled the streets of central Athens, Greece on Tuesday in a major parade which marked the anniversary of Greek Independence Day.

The rain didn’t stop the parade, with students marching while holding umbrellas. Students from schools across the Athens municipality marched with school bands with each group led by a flag bearer and five attendants. The parade opened with Kalavryta General High School.

At Syntagma, representatives of the political world were present, many wearing outfits with blue and white colours to represent the Greek flag.

Present were Minister of Education and Religious Affairs of Greece Sofia Zacharaki, Course of Freedom (Plefsi Eleftherias) President Zoe Konstantopoulou, and Pavlos Geroulanos from PASOK. Dionysis Kalamatianos from SYRIZA attended, and among the officials was also the Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas.

Zacharaki, Konstantopoulou and Doukas laid wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier outside parliament while the national anthem was performed.
