Athens and Airbnb launch emergency housing program for earthquake victims

·

The Municipality of Athens and Airbnb.org have launched an emergency accommodation program to assist residents of Santorini and other Cycladic islands impacted by ongoing earthquakes.

The initiative offers free temporary housing in Athens for those displaced by safety concerns due to the seismic activity.

The program provides ten days of free accommodation for up to 200 families, with further assistance to be evaluated based on evolving needs.

Displaced residents from Santorini, Amorgos, Anafi, and Ios can apply by calling the emergency hotline at 1595.

The Municipality of Athens will facilitate requests and coordinate with Airbnb.org to secure listings for those in need.

Athens Mayor Haris Doukas expressed the city’s quick response, saying, “From the very first moment, we opened the Municipality of Athens’ children’s camps in Agios Andreas, where we are already hosting 130 people. Now, we are taking an additional step by collaborating with Airbnb.org to offer free accommodation to 200 families.”

The initiative also invites property owners to offer accommodations through Airbnb.org, which has waived service fees for emergency bookings. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of solidarity and rapid action in disaster response.
