Australian PM plays down pro-Palestine protest outside Brisbane’s Greek Club

·

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has played down a pro-Palestine protest of approximately 250 people gathered outside the Greek Club in South Brisbane, Queensland on Friday, July 12.

Albanese was present at the Greek Club alongside Queensland Labor Premier Steven Miles and other federal ministers to attend an Australian Labor Party fundraising dinner.

Justice for Palestine Meanjin organised the protest rally to coincide with Labor’s True Believers dinner in Brisbane. Protestors called for a ceasefire in Gaza.

A young female was charged for allegedly spitting in the face of a police officer during the protest. She was charged with a single count of serious assault and was granted bail.

The heavy police presence at the venue on Friday night included a helicopter monitoring the venue.

Despite the intimidation of patrons entering and exiting the Greek Club, the Australian PM has since been adamant the protest was compliant and not disruptive. Albanese said he “didn’t see anyone there.”

The comments have since made him the subject of accusations of downplaying.
