Tens of thousands honour Mikis Theodorakis at centenary concert in Athens

·

Tens of thousands of people gathered at the historic Kallimarmaro Stadium in Athens, Greece on Wednesday evening for a concert commemorating the centenary of the birth of legendary Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis.

Organised by the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), the tribute—titled “My Whole Life Near You”—brought together some of the country’s most beloved artists and drew a packed audience.

KKE General Secretary Dimitris Koutsoumpas addressed the crowd, calling the event “a triumph of culture” and highlighting Theodorakis’ enduring legacy as both a composer and a political figure.

“What sets Theodorakis apart is his sense of duty to guide the people toward social liberation, through his art and his actions in the people’s movement,” he said.

Theodorakis’ daughter, Margarita Theodoraki, also spoke, thanking the public for honouring her father’s life and work.

The concert featured performances by renowned artists including Gerasimos Andreatos, Giorgos Dalaras, and Maria Farantouri, in what was described as a “mural of 20th-century Greece” through music.

To accommodate the overwhelming turnout, Athens Metro extended its services. Striking images shared on social media captured the scale and emotion of the evening, reflecting the profound and lasting influence of Theodorakis’ music and activism.
