Rebetiko music fills Sydney’s City Recital Hall during symphony concert

The sounds of rebetiko music filled the City Recital Hall in Sydney on Friday, April 21 as international singer, Ifigeneia Ioannou, performed in the Rebetiko Symphony Concert.

Ifigeneia came direct from Greece for the concert, which was part of the Greek Festival of Sydney and presented by the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW (GOCNSW).

The orchestra drew loud applause.

On the night, the vocalist performed classics from an iconic Rebetiko film by Costas Ferris, and original music by Stavros Xarchakos.

The performance also featured music by Kostas Skarvelis, Vassilis Tsitsanis and Panayiotis Toundas, under the direction renowned director George Ellis.

Everyone loved the performance.

One attendee, Chrysanthi, told The Greek Herald on the night she really enjoyed the concert.

“I enjoyed the whole thing. The instruments, the singer, the atmosphere – everything,” she said.
