According to Ekathimerini, the film was chosen for nomination by a seven-member committee because it was “an artistic and creative depiction of the economic and moral crisis” facing Greece.

Entries for the Foreign Language Film Award will be viewed by the Oscars Committee and selected by secret ballot for 2024.

Behind the Haystacks will also feature in this year’s Greek Film Festival in Australia.
