Canterbury League Club chairman welcomes Cyprus Community members to Lakemba

·

Canterbury League Club chairman Peter Winchester has issued a warm welcome to members, families and friends of The Cyprus Club, confirming the Community will be hosted at The Lakemba Club, 26 Quigg Street, Lakemba, while it secures new premises.

“We understand that this is a time of transition, and we are honoured to offer a place where you can continue your traditions, activities, and connections,” Mr Winchester said in a message to members.

“We look forward to hosting your Cypriot Dance Classes and Language School at The Lakemba Club. Whether you are here for cultural activities, a community gathering, or simply to catch up with friends, we look forward to seeing The Cyprus Club spirit thrive within our walls.”

Mr Winchester added that the partnership would provide “a supportive space in the short term” and “foster new friendships and strengthen ties between our two great communities.”

Relocation details

The Cyprus Community of NSW is relocating operations from Stanmore to Lakemba following a fire order issued by Inner West Council requiring the Stanmore premises to close on August 30.

Administrators EY Australia recently confirmed the Stanmore property has been sold to developer Conquest for $55 million plus GST, with the sale subject to a Supreme Court of NSW judgment. Community services will continue at Stanmore until the final day and then restart in Lakemba.

According to the welcome notice, dancing and Greek school at Lakemba will begin on 30 August 2025. Other classes will run at the NSW School of Languages, 35 West Street, Petersham. Members will also soon have access to Canterbury Leagues Club’s facilities opposite Belmore Train Station.

The Lakemba Club will serve as the temporary home of the Community’s legacy Cypriot kafenio and bistro, with plans to relaunch the long-running Saturday Cyprus Taverna night.
