Candidates of the diaspora on Greece’s national election party ballots

Greece’s national elections are being held this week and the new electoral law obliges Greece’s political parties to include Greeks from abroad in the national ballots.

Among the list is one Greek candidate from Australia – Costas Stefanidis. Tony Tsourdalakis, President of the Cretan Federation of Australia and New Zealand, announced he could be included on the New Democracy ticket, but he was not a successful candidate.

According to ERT, the party candidates from the Greek diaspora are as follows:

New Democracy

  • In 3rd place on the ballot and in an elected position is the Minister of Civil Protection Christos Stylianidis (Cyprus).
  • In 10th place is lawyer Nikos Korogiannakis from Brussels.
  • In 11th place is the educator Maria Diamantopoulou, president of the New Democracy organisation in Paris.

SYRIZA

  • In 1st place, Othon Iliopoulos, Associate Professor of Medicine and Clinical Oncologist at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Centre.
  • In 9th place, Stefanos Kasselakis, who lives in Miami, USA and is active in the field of Shipping.
  • In 12th place, Natasha Romanou, researcher at NASA, adjunct professor at Columbia University, New York.
The new electoral law obliges the parties of Greece to include Greeks from abroad in the national ballots.

PASOK – KINAL

  • In 3rd place, Eleni Chronopoulou, lawyer and legal advisor (Brussels).
  • In 8th place, Eleni Anna Dimitrakoudis – advisor to the political group of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) in the European Parliament.
  • In 14th place, Simos Gerasimidis, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Massachusetts.

KKE

  • In 3rd place, Anna Grigoriadou, environmental studies scientist (Berlin, Germany).
  • In 11th place, Rendzelas Panagiotis. Assistant Professor of Social Psychology, University College London (Birmingham, Great Britain).
  • In 13th place, Panagiotis Alopoudis. Member of the Board of Directors at Rems-Murr-Klinken Hospitals (Sordorf, Stuttgart, Germany).

MeRA25

  • Christina Baltatzi, 33-year-old expatriate, architect and elected member of the Political Secretariat of MeRA25.
  • Expatriate architect Costas Stefanidis, resident of Australia, member of DiEM25 and active member of the expatriate community and DiEM25 in Melbourne.
  • Urban planner Spyros Mouratidis, a resident of England and one of the first members of DiEM25 in 2016.
