Stefanie Bousboureli on struggling to find a house amid Sydney’s rental crisis

·

In Sydney’s inner and eastern suburbs, the number of people inspecting rental properties has doubled from last year, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

Domain data recorded a 145 percent increase in the eastern suburbs for the number of people who have given their personal details to an agent to enter a property.

Queues of up to 50 people at rental inspections is also becoming the norm in suburbs such as Zetland and Chippendale.

Stefanie Bousboureli, who moved to Sydney from Greece a month ago to study for her masters, spoke to The Sydney Morning Herald and said it was “very hard” to find a place to rent.

“Everywhere I go, there are like 100 people trying to inspect the same place. I wasn’t expecting this,” she said.

This comes as the rental crisis in Sydney begins to affect not just those traditionally facing hardship, such as the long-term unemployed, but also people who are in work and have good rental histories.

With the NSW state election on Saturday, March 25, both the Liberal and Labor parties have vowed to address this crisis with a number of housing policies.
