AHEPA NSW holds its 68th annual convention in Sydney

·

The 68 annual Convention of the Order of AHEPA NSW was held at AHEPA NSW Hall in Rockdale, Sydney on Sunday, November 27.

The all-day convention was attended by the Consul General of Greece in Sydney, Ioannis Mallikourtis.

During the day, there were discussions about serious proposals for the future direction of the organisation, the presentation of Certificates of Appreciation to leading figures of the organisation, and the election of a new Grand Lodge of NSW.

Bill Skandalakis was re-elected unopposed as President for another year. The majority of officers
from the previous committee were also re-elected, with a noticeable increase in the presence of female
members.

Beyond a briefing about the current state of our national issues, Mr Mallikourtis urged the delegates and other members of AHEPA NSW to continue their work in support of the most crucial national issue: the continuance of Greek as a spoken language amongst the community as, well as the development of Greek education in New South Wales.

Mr Mallikourtis emphasised the significance of the «Learning Hellenic via tablets» project in NSW public schools, sponsored by AHEPA NSW INC.

After his address, the Consul General and Mr Skandalakis presented Certificates of Appreciation to members with great contributions to AHEPA NSW over the past year.

They were: Mrs Evangelia Mouhtaris (for services to the Kafeneion Seniors Group and Chapter Antigone), Mrs Charoulla Themistocleous (for services to Chapter Antigone), Mr George Balassis (for services to the AHEPA Hunters Club and Chapter Diogenes), Mr Kostas Kapodistrias (for services to the
Kafeneion Seniors Group and Chapters Anatole and Platon), and Mr Harry Fandakis (for services to
AHEPA NSW INC and Chapter Chiron).

Chapters and Committees of the Order of AHEPA NSW presented their annual Reports with reviews
of their events and other activities over the last twelve months, as well as proposals for the future
events and activities – 71 pages altogether.

As anticipated, the great project of the renovation of the Bexley Bowling and Community Club, the
future headquarters of the organisation, dominated the open forum part of the Convention. Many ideas
for activities were discussed.
