9-year-old Marianta Lampou crowned junior chess champion of Europe

A 9-year-old Greek girl has been crowned junior chess champion in the European Youth Chess Championship.

Marianta Lampou triumphed in the Girls under 10 category, scoring 8.5 points.

The Championship took place in Antalya, Turkey, where 60 players from 30 different countries participated.“I felt very happy, it was the first time I participated in a European championship,” Lampou said.

Lampou started playing chess when she was in preschool. She is currently part of the Aigli Papagou Sports and Cultural club in Athens.

“I liked chess very much from the first time I opened the chess board and I continued,” Lampou said.

The 9-year-old was awarded by the Secretary General of the European Chess Union, Theodoros Tsorbatzoglou.
