65 wildfires recorded across Greece as evacuations continue

·

The Greek Fire Service said it has dealt with more than 300 forest fires over the past week — 65 of them in the past 24 hours.

Firefighters have battled a large forest blaze that forced the evacuation of the seaside resort of Porto Germeno, 70 kilometres west of Athens, AP News has reported this morning.

The blaze is the latest in a series of wildfires that flared as strong winds swept across several parts of Greece.

Fire Second Lieutenant, Rafaela Tzima, said the blaze is “decaying fast,” raising hopes it could be soon contained.

The fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon and at its peak, more than 130 firefighters and volunteers, assisted by 10 water-dropping aircraft, were battling the blaze.

The village of Mytikas was also ordered to evacuate as a precaution, with only one uninhabited house being damaged and no current reports of injuries.

Lieutenant Tzima reported that the fire that broke out at Agios Ioannis at Corinthia has been partially contained. While it is still persisting, it is of no threat to residents.

The fire at Kalamaki in the Achaia region and Pikermi in Attica have also been contained, she added.

Just this morning, 40 firefighters with 17 vehicles rushed to Korifi in Pyrgos as two forest fires broke out. According to reports by Patri News, the fire does not presently threaten homes.
