Peter’s of Kensington has closed the doors of its iconic pink Kensington store after 49 years of trading, with the landmark site set to undergo redevelopment.
Staff and owners farewelled customers on the final day of operations, marking the end of an era for one of Sydney’s most recognisable retail destinations, affectionately known to generations of shoppers as the “Big Pink Building.”
In a public message marking the occasion, the business reflected on nearly five decades of memories, milestones and community connection built inside the store.
“Peter’s of Kensington has been so much more than just a store,” the statement said.
The business thanked its founders, staff, suppliers and loyal customers for their long-standing support, describing the store as a place where “friendships were formed, careers were built, marriages began, children were welcomed, and new generations joined the family.”
The store itself was built from humble beginnings by Peter Satouris and his wife Christa. After their marriage, the couple began selling travel goods in Haymarket before Peter founded a small quality gift store on the corner of Anzac Parade and Bowral Street in Kensington in 1977.
The business later expanded into its first permanent store a few hundred metres up the road, with the distinct large pink building quickly becoming a pre-eminent retail destination known for quality goods and personalised service.
On its final trading day, staff gathered to farewell customers who had supported the business throughout its 49-year history.
“As one chapter closes, another begins,” the statement said. “This isn’t goodbye — it’s simply to be continued.”
While the Kensington store has now closed due to the redevelopment of the building, the company confirmed it will continue operating online and from its Birkenhead Point location.
Despite the end of the physical store chapter, the business said it remains deeply grateful for the community built around Peter’s of Kensington over nearly five decades.
“Thank you for being part of our story,” the statement concluded.
