Greek Prime Minister’s Australia trip raised during talks with Archbishop Makarios

·

His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia met with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Maximos Mansion in Athens on Friday, February 13, for talks focused on the needs of Greeks abroad, particularly the Greek community in Australia.

During the meeting, discussions centred on efforts by Greece and Australia to avoid double taxation, with both governments working toward co-signing a bilateral agreement in the near future.

The Prime Minister’s initiative to further facilitate postal voting for Greeks living overseas, including in parliamentary elections, was also addressed.

After being briefed on the draft bill under consultation, Archbishop Makarios congratulated Mitsotakis for his “tangible interest” in the Greeks of the diaspora and for initiatives strengthening their ties with Greece.

The pair also discussed the Prime Minister’s forthcoming visit to Australia in March for celebrations marking the National Anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821.

Mitsotakis expressed his joy at the opportunity to meet Greeks in Australia, while Archbishop Makarios said he was confident the visit would be substantive as well as ceremonial, conveying the community’s “joy, honour, and anticipation.”
