The Greek Orthodox Church of St Anna in Bundall welcomed about 600 people to a community Christmas fair aimed at supporting those experiencing homelessness, offering food, clothing, toys and services in the lead-up to Christmas.
“It’s a beautiful Greek fair,” Father Roman Stergiou of the Greek Orthodox Church of St Anna said.
The event provided early Christmas cheer with a free barber, podiatry, physiotherapy, donated clothes and toys, and a festive lunch, with soutzoukakia as the main attraction.
Yas Matbouly of Serving Our People said the need in the community remains high.
“We’re definitely seeing arrays of people doing it tough and it hasn’t stopped,” he said.
Attendees included people on pensions, those with carers, former firefighters and volunteers, who gathered to enjoy a shared meal and community support.
The event involved months of planning, more than 70 volunteers, and hundreds of volunteer hours, reflecting a strong effort to share some real Christmas spirit with the local community.
