Zeibekiko Festival Australia kicks off in Sydney with music, memory and movement

·

The 3rd Zeibekiko Festival Australia launched in dazzling style on Friday, 3 October 2025, at the Greek Community Club in Sydney – transforming the night into a celebration of music, movement and memory.

Presented by Ventouris Productions, the festival runs until 12 October across Sydney and Melbourne, inviting audiences to rediscover the raw emotion and cultural power of zeibekiko – the dance of the soul.

From the first notes to the last step, opening night was a sensory feast: the scent of traditional food, the strum of the bouzouki, and the rhythm of dancers pounding the floor in tribute to generations past.

A journey through sound and heritage

The evening began with the Cretan Music Group led by Michael Platyrrahos, performing the haunting Tabahaniotika rebetika of Crete. With instruments such as the laouto, boulgari, and tzouras bouzouki, the ensemble transported the audience to an era when Greek songs were born from exile, resilience and longing.

The night then erupted in rhythm and applause as Tassos Lambrou and his Sydney-based musicians took the stage, delivering a bouzouki show that captured the energy of Greek tavernas — where every note tells a story and every beat invites a dance.

When the ceremonial cake-cutting took place, performers from every dance school and association gathered arm-in-arm on stage, smiling as cameras flashed. It was a powerful image of Greek Australia united — proof that tradition thrives when shared.

Words that stirred the heart

Master of Ceremony Ray Vatalidis from the Rallis School of Greek Dance welcomed guests before giving the floor to international guests Areti Ketime, Dimitris Stefopoulos, Dr Christos Theologos and Stefanos Kyriazakos.

As organiser Sophia Ventouris addressed the crowd, she reminded everyone that the festival is not simply about performance, but about connection – between generations, between continents, between stories.

For attendee Panayioti, the night was more than just entertainment. “When the first zeibekiko started, I felt a lump in my throat. It reminded me of my grandfather dancing — not for show, but from the heart.”

A living dance, a moving legacy

The Zeibekiko Show followed, bringing together an extraordinary line-up of Greek dance troupes and solo performers. Each offered a unique interpretation of the iconic dance — part improvisation, part confession, part ritual.

Performers included:

  • Sophia Ventouris School of Greek Dance
  • Greek Dance for Adults with Andrew & Sofia Rossides
  • Pontoxeniteas NSW Dance Group
  • Greek Dance Rhythms
  • Kalymnian Association of NSW
  • Sydney Greek Dancing School
  • Niko Vasilas: My Zeibekiko Journey
  • Mytilenean Brotherhood of NSW
  • SIZMOS
  • Effie Tourvas
  • RSGDSYD Rallis School of Greek Dance

Each group left its mark — from the measured steps of tradition to the spontaneous power of modern interpretation.

The spirit of the festival

As the clock approached 11pm, Areti, Greece’s ethereal songstress, took the stage with violin virtuoso Stefopoulos, filling the hall with melodies that shimmered between sorrow and joy. Her voice, delicate yet fierce, reminded audiences that zeibekiko is not just danced — it is lived.

By midnight, the dance floor was alive with guests swaying to the sounds of DJ Dean, proving that in every Greek heart, there beats a rhythm waiting to rise.

The 3rd Zeibekiko Festival Australia continues its journey through Sydney and Melbourne until 12 October, with concerts, workshops and scholarly talks exploring how one dance continues to carry the soul of a nation.
