Greek PM urges EU funding for joint defence projects at Copenhagen summit

·

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called for Europe to mobilise funding for joint defence initiatives on Wednesday, October 1, stressing the need for projects such as anti-missile protection and drone defence systems.

Speaking on arrival at the informal EU Council in Copenhagen, Mitsotakis said such efforts must cover all of Europe’s borders, not just the east.

“Obviously, the southeast and the southern borders must also be covered so that Europe is protected against any future threat,” he noted.

He described the meeting as an opportunity to address Europe’s geostrategic security amid the war in Ukraine and wider geopolitical upheaval, urging the EU to “progress from words to actions regarding its unified European protection.”

The PM highlighted Greece’s long-standing defence commitments, saying the country will continue allocating over 3% of GDP to defence spending in the coming years, well above the European average.
