Calls grow for Prospect Road mural in memory of local barber John Giatras

·

The creation of a mural may be considered along Prospect Road to honour much-loved local barber John Giatras, following calls from MP Lucy Hood.

In a post on Facebook, Ms Hood said the community had been searching for ways to pay tribute after Giatras’ passing, describing him as “the incredible man that was our local barber and friend.”

“Thank you to the many who left flowers, letters and candles at John and George’s,” she said.

The City of Prospect has confirmed a plaque will be installed in the garden bed outside the shop, while flowers of condolence will be mulched and placed in the gardens.

Ms Hood said she met with Prospect City Council Mayor Matt Larwood and asked if council would consider a mural of John, or John and his father George, somewhere along Prospect Road, ideally near the barber shop.

“Council agreed to send my suggestion to its City Wide Art Roundtable for further consideration,” she said.

She added she would also pay tribute to Giatras in State Parliament on October 15 “so he is included in our state’s history books forever.”

“Gone, but never forgotten,” Ms Hood concluded.
