Melbourne Racing Club memberships linked to chairman John Kanga under scrutiny

·

Melbourne Racing Club chairman John Kanga is facing scrutiny after 24 memberships linked to his family were purchased with a single credit card during last year’s leadership battle.

According to The Age, the memberships were part of his push for a special general meeting, though the motion was ruled invalid. Weeks later, Kanga secured control through board elections and became chairman.

Since then, seven directors and several senior executives have resigned, while the club recorded a $17.3 million loss and its debt rose to $178 million.

The MRC insists the memberships complied with rules and were part of a broader drive.

Kanga has dismissed governance complaints as baseless and remains popular with members for initiatives such as cheaper food and drinks, saving Sandown Racecourse, and scrapping a $230 million grandstand plan.
