Minnesota United sign Nectarios Triantis from Sunderland

·

Minnesota United have signed midfielder Nectarios Triantis from English Premier League club Sunderland AFC, the team announced Friday, August 22.

The 22-year-old, a former Australian youth international who recently switched allegiance to represent Greece, is under contract through 2029 with an option for 2030. He will occupy both U22 Initiative and international roster slots.

Triantis joined Sunderland from A-League side Central Coast Mariners in 2023, making five first-team appearances.

He spent much of the past two seasons on loan at Scottish Premiership club Hibernian FC, where he registered three goals and six assists in 50 matches.

Last season, he featured in 29 league games, helping Hibs secure third place and a Europa Conference League qualifying spot.

“Nectarios is an interesting profile who will bolster our midfield and provide an additional defensive option having played as a centre midfielder and a centre back,” said chief soccer officer and sporting director Khaled El-Ahmad.

“His technical qualities combined with his ability to affect games in both defensive and offensive set pieces is something we highly value. We are looking forward to seeing Nectarios grow his game with Minnesota United.”

The Loons currently sit second in the Western Conference with 47 points (13W-6L-8D), in contention for both the top spot in the West and the Supporters’ Shield.
