Greece’s tallest building reaches halfway point

·

Construction of the Riviera Tower – set to become Greece’s tallest building – has passed the halfway mark, now standing at 113 meters on its way to a final height of 200 meters, according to globalconstructionreview.com.

The 50-storey skyscraper will house 169 apartments ranging from one to five bedrooms and will stand nearly twice as tall as the current record-holder, the 103-meter Athens Tower 1, completed in 1971.

Located on the southern coast of Athens at the former Ellinikon International Airport site, the Riviera Tower is a key part of The Ellinikon, Europe’s largest greenfield urban regeneration project.

The project is being developed by Lamda Development, with Foster + Partners as the lead architect. Construction is being handled by Bouygues in partnership with Intrakat, while Mace and Jacobs serve as project managers and Hill International as supervisor.

The building has already received LEED Gold Pre-Certification for its sustainability features.

In 2023, Mace announced that the tower’s foundation work involved Greece’s “single biggest concrete pour,” using over 7,000 cubic meters of specially formulated concrete with 70% less cement than standard mixes. The pour lasted 38 continuous hours.

The Riviera Tower is one of four high-rises planned for The Ellinikon development. Completion of the tower is scheduled for the first quarter of 2026, as part of the project’s first phase.
