Emergency work measures and beaches packed as Greece endures intense heatwave

·

Greece is in the grip of a four-day heatwave, with temperatures soaring above 40°C, prompting authorities to implement emergency measures in some regions.

From Monday, mandatory work breaks have been imposed between midday and 5pm for outdoor labourers and food delivery workers in parts of central Greece and several islands. Employers have also been urged to offer remote work options.

Although no specific measures have been introduced in Athens, residents are flocking to the coast from the early morning hours in search of relief. Organised beaches and remote coves alike have been inundated with locals and tourists hoping to cool off before temperatures peak later in the day.

Meteorologists warn that the heatwave will persist through to Thursday, with mainland areas such as Attica, Thessaly, and the Peloponnese experiencing not only scorching days but uncomfortably hot nights as well.

Authorities continue to advise the public to limit travel during the hottest parts of the day, remain indoors where possible, and stay hydrated.
