Nick Kyrgios to return to French Open in surprise doubles comeback

·

Nick Kyrgios is set to make a surprise return to the French Open for the first time since 2017, this time competing in the men’s doubles alongside fellow Australian Jordan Thompson.

According to ESPN, the 30-year-old has battled injuries to his foot, knee, and wrist since reaching the Wimbledon final in 2022, and has only played four singles matches in 2025, with a sole win at the Miami Open.

Kyrgios had not planned to feature at Roland Garros but accepted Thompson’s invitation to team up after Max Purcell, Thompson’s regular doubles partner, was sidelined due to a doping ban.

“The French Open was never really on the cards,” Kyrgios told The Canberra Times. “But after the stuff with Max Purcell, Jordan was looking for a partner and he asked me if I wanted to play.

“We’ve played at the French Open before, so it’ll be good to get out there and play with another fellow Aussie and have a bit of fun.”

Kyrgios remains one of the sport’s most talked-about figures, admired for his raw talent and candid personality, though he has also attracted controversy. While still chasing a Grand Slam singles title, he won the 2022 Australian Open doubles title with Thanasi Kokkinakis.

He is expected to return to singles competition during the grass-court season leading up to Wimbledon. The French Open begins on May 25.
