Greece’s main opposition SYRIZA party splits as members defect

·

A left-wing faction of Greece’s main opposition party, SYRIZA, has confirmed its splitting from the party and is expected to form a new faction.

According to The Guardian, the reason for the split was because SYRIZA’s recently elected leader Stefanos Kasselakis has allegedly abandoned the party’s core beliefs, “rightwing populism.”

The Umbrella faction, led by the former Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos, announced its departure weeks after Kasselakis said he wanted to expel three significant members from the faction.

In response, Kasselakis was accussed of “Trumpian practices (and) right-leaning populism.”

Although Umbrella supporters have not announced their future plans, a new leftwing political party is expected to form.
