·

On Wednesday, 4 October, Mr Peter Yiannoudes OAM presented a mesmerising account of the events following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974.

Taking place at the Greek Centre in Lonsdale St, Melbourne, Mr Yiannoudes transported the audience to the 1970-80s, providing them with insights into the discussions he took part in with politicians in Australia, Cyprus and Greece.

Peter Yiannoudes reflected on his concerns regarding the Cypriot issue.

Mr Yiannoudes also shared rare documentary footage of gatherings, protest rallies and demonstrations held by Greeks and Cypriots in Australia and overseas to raise awareness of the Cypriot issue. The late Archbishop Makarios’ address to the Hellenic diaspora in Australia was especially moving, as were the scenes of displaced Cypriots in refugee settlements following the invasion.

Mr Yiannoudes emphasised the unity displayed by all Greek and Cypriot communities in Australia as they collectively sought to obtain justice for Cyprus. Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of the invasion.
