Maria Sakkari storms into Doha quarterfinals after tie-break battle

Maria Sakkari has progressed to the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 tournament in Doha, ending the run of qualifier Varvara Gracheva in straight sets.

Gracheva made a strong start, breaking early in the first set and later earning a set point on Sakkari’s serve, but the Greek prevailed in a tie-break, winning it 7-3.

Sakkari then dominated the second set, closing out the match 6-0.

Sakkari will next face either world No. 1 Iga Swiatek or Daria Kasatkina for a place in the semifinals.
