Mitsotakis urges EU to rethink strategic approach to defence and migration

·

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has urged the European Union to adopt a more strategic stance toward countries not aligned with the bloc’s Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP).

Speaking at an EU leaders’ summit in Brussels, Mitsotakis emphasised that defence partnerships should not be treated “as business as usual or simply as business transactions,” but must reflect Europe’s broader strategic interests.

He welcomed the activation of the EU’s fiscal “escape clause” to accommodate increased defense spending but argued it was insufficient.

Mitsotakis called for the creation of a dedicated European financial tool to fund joint defence projects, while also promoting Greece’s 12-year armament plan and the need to support the European defence startup ecosystem to drive innovation.

On migration, Mitsotakis said Libya should work with Greece and the EU to address rising migrant flows from North Africa.
