Greta Thunberg alleges mistreatment in Israeli detention after arriving in Athens

·

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has alleged she was mistreated while detained in Israel, speaking to hundreds of supporters and media upon her arrival at Athens International Airport on Monday.

“I could talk for a very, very long time about our mistreatment and abuses in our imprisonment. Trust me, but that is not the story,” she said, shifting the focus to what she described as Israel’s “escalating genocide and mass destruction.”

Thunberg, who arrived with her fist raised alongside fellow activists, was greeted by chants of solidarity as she accused Israel of violating international law by blocking humanitarian aid to Gaza.

“Israel is escalating genocide and mass destruction with genocidal intent, attempting to erase an entire population in front of our eyes,” she declared, urging governments and institutions to act.

The 21-year-old was among 134 activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla, including 27 Greek nationals, who were released from Israeli detention and flown to Athens on a special repatriation flight organised by Greece’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in coordination with the Greek Embassy in Tel Aviv.

In her remarks, Thunberg also called for attention to the suffering of people in Gaza, Congo, Sudan, and Afghanistan, insisting that “the siege, occupation, and oppression must stop.”
