Back-to-back Synod terms for Archbishop Makarios of Australia

His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia will once again serve on the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, this time for the term running from 1 September 2025 to 28 February 2026.

The Ecumenical Patriarchate recently announced the new composition of its Synod, which is presided over by His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.

Archbishop Makarios had also been appointed to the previous six-month Synod, convening from 1 March to 31 August 2025, marking a consecutive term of service at the highest ecclesiastical body of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

The Synod’s new composition is as follows:

  • Metropolitan Emmanuel of Chalcedon
  • Metropolitan Ambrosios of Karpathos and Kasos
  • Metropolitan Apostolos of Miletus
  • Metropolitan Athanasios of Colognia
  • Metropolitan Andreas of Arkalochori, Kastelli, and Viannos
  • Metropolitan Sebastian of Atlanta
  • Metropolitan Cleopas of Sweden and All Scandinavia
  • Metropolitan Maximos of Selyvria
  • Archbishop Makarios of Australia
  • Metropolitan Kyrillos of Imbros and Tenedos
  • Metropolitan Maximos of Switzerland
  • Metropolitan Iakovos of Mexico
