Athens University opens Cyprus branch in higher education milestone

·

The establishment of a Cyprus branch of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens marks “a milestone” in efforts to further internationalise and upgrade higher education in the country, President Nikos Christodoulides said at an official ceremony in Athens.

He described the move as a continuation of historic ties, noting generations of Cypriots have studied at the university.

“The creation of the branch in Cyprus strengthens the strategic goal of transforming the country into a regional centre of knowledge, research and innovation, with significant, multi-level benefits for society, the economy, and the international image of Cyprus,” he said.

Christodoulides added the branch would enrich the educational landscape, foster synergies and expand academic and research opportunities, stressing that higher education is “a fundamental pillar of development.”

Greece’s Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki called the initiative “a shared national success,” saying Greece and Cyprus are becoming a regional reference point for education.
