Cypriot Australian Andrea Michaels has been appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of South Australia as part of a series of new judicial appointments announced by the State Government.
Ms Michaels will begin in the role on June 15, filling the vacancy created by the elevation of Associate Justice Katrina Bochner to Justice of the Supreme Court.
The appointment comes shortly after Ms Michaels announced she was stepping away from politics and returning to the legal profession following her time as Member for Enfield and a South Australian government minister.
Before entering parliament, Ms Michaels built an extensive legal career specialising in tax, estate planning and commercial law. She also served as Managing Director of boutique law firm NDA Law and received national recognition through repeated listings in Best Lawyers in Australia for commercial law, tax law and wealth management.
During her time in government, she oversaw reforms including changes to residential tenancy laws, the state’s first 10-year arts policy, and the establishment of the small and family business portfolio.
Associate Justices play an important role supporting the work of Supreme Court judges through case management, mediations and interlocutory hearings.
Her appointment forms part of a broader series of judicial appointments announced by Attorney-General Kyam Maher.
“Each of the individuals being appointed to judicial office today bring exceptional legal skills, and wide and varied careers,” Maher said.
“These appointees have a diverse range of credentials and experience that will serve them in good stead as they take on important new responsibilities.”
