Young artists shine in ‘First Light’ exhibition at opening of That Art Place in Carlton

·

More than 65 young artists from the St George area in Sydney had their creative moment in the spotlight on Saturday, July 12, as That Art Place officially opened its brand-new art studio and gallery space in Carlton with a community exhibition titled First Light.

The opening marked a major milestone for the beloved local art school, which is run by Andronika Christodoulou.

It had operated out of a small Bexley studio for the past six years before expanding due to high demand for its after-school programs, workshops, and art events.

Families and friends queued outside the new Garfield Street warehouse in eager anticipation of seeing student artworks – many of which were being exhibited for the first time.

The student showcase featured vibrant paintings, charcoal sketches, and mixed media works by children as young as six through to adult learners, all of whom proudly guided their guests through the curated gallery space.

Guests were treated to mocktails, canapés, and live string music by The Magnificals Orchestra, while a Monet-inspired “Water Lilies” cake, created by Sweet Buttercream Co., added a touch of elegance to the creative atmosphere.

The highlight of the night was the People’s Choice Award, taken out by 14-year-old Celeste Damayanwong for her striking charcoal lion portrait Majesty.

Second place went to Zoe Sigrimis, 17, for her evocative painting Transient Moment, while third place was awarded to 12-year-old Alessia Chiotis for her autumnal landscape Autumn Falls.

That Art Place offers weekly art classes, Paint Parties for birthdays, Sip & Paint sessions for adults, and private bookings for corporate team-building events.
