Hellenic Lyceum of Sydney receives $5,000 donation to buy an authentic Greek costume

The Hellenic Lyceum of Sydney held a “Meet & Greet” event with The Daughters of Penelope AHEPA Australia to exhibit and educate citizens on traditional Greek costumes.

The event had a brilliant turnout and was attended by a number of official guests, including Father Milton Chrissavghis. 

Setting the tone for the event, Sophie Brunetta and Antonia Nikolopoulos welcomed guests at the entrance dressed in authentic Greek costumes. 

The President of Daughters of Penelope, Maria Alexandrou, and the President of the Hellenic Lyceum of Sydney, Liana Vertzayias then initiated the presentation with a warm reception.

Speakers on the day included Theodora Zourkas, who spoke about the Amalia, Evzona and Gida costumes; Dimitra Micos, who spoke about the Mani costume; Marina Efthimiou, who explained the Karagouna costume; Stella Sorotou, who focused on the Hydra costume and Bouboulina; Stella Boyages, who spoke about the Castellorizian costume; and Ms Vertzayias who spoke about the Sarakatsani costume.

During the event, Ms Alexandrou also announced a generous donation of $5,000 to the Hellenic Lyceum on behalf of The Daughters of Penelope to fund the purchase of an authentic Greek costume. Recognition for the generous donation has been planned once the costume finds its home.
