Greek Orthodox Community of Northern Australia honours past Presidents

·

The Greek Orthodox Community of Northern Australia Inc. (GOCNA) proudly celebrated the Feast of Saint Nicholas on Saturday, December 6, at the Holy Church of Saint Nicholas in Darwin, in a day marked by faith, community spirit, and recognition of outstanding service.

The celebrations commenced with the Divine Liturgy, followed by a formal community gathering where the President of the GOCNA, Michael L. Koulianos, addressed parishioners and guests.

In his address, Mr Koulianos acknowledged the central role of the Church and the Greek School as the two enduring pillars of the Community, safeguarding the Orthodox faith, the Greek language, cultural heritage, and identity for future generations in Northern Australia.

Special tribute was paid to Father Joel for his many years of devoted pastoral service, tireless ministry, and continued spiritual guidance to the parish and the wider Greek community.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of Life Membership (Honorary for Life) to four former Presidents of the GOCNA, in recognition of their exceptional contribution and leadership:

  • Lillian Gomatos, the first female President of a Greek Community in Australia and the “mother” of Darwin GleNTi, under whose leadership the Church was renovated and expanded,
  • Yiannis Vrontos, for his leadership in elevating the Greek School to new levels of development and recognition,
  • Yiannis Nikolakis, the longest-serving President, during whose tenure the iconostasis of the Church was upgraded and GleNTi evolved into the region’s most significant local cultural event,
  • Nikolaos Poniris, who led the renovation of the community hall and elevated GleNTi to a nationally recognised Greek cultural festival.

In addition, a special plaque of honour was presented to Nikitas Halkitis, who was appointed the inaugural Honorary President of the GOCNA for a four-year term at the 2025 Annual General Meeting held on 30 October.

“The Community stands today because of the collective sacrifice, vision, and dedication of those who came before us. In honouring these leaders, we also honour their families, their committees, and every volunteer who served alongside them,” Mr Koulianos said.

“As the Greek saying reminds us, one swallow does not bring spring — progress is always the result of collective effort.”

The event concluded with Father Joel offering a blessing over the communal meal that followed, bringing the celebration to a close in a spirit of unity, gratitude, and faith.
