George Ganiatsas named City of Ryde’s Volunteer of the Year

·

Greek Australian football legend George Ganiatsas has been honoured as Volunteer of the Year at the 2025 City of Ryde Volunteer Recognition Awards, held on Thursday, May 22.

Ganiatsas was recognised for his more than three decades of tireless service to the Gladesville Ryde Magic Football Club and the wider community.

For over 35 years, Ganiatsas has been a driving force behind youth development, community engagement, and grassroots sport in the region. Through his volunteer work, he has helped shape generations of young players while promoting the values of friendship, teamwork and resilience.

“To say George is one of a kind would be an understatement,” Gladesville Ryde Magic FC wrote in a social media tribute.

“He has a heart of gold—one that beats for football, friendship, and community. His generosity, commitment, and unwavering football spirit continue to enrich the lives of those around him.”

The Volunteer Recognition Awards, hosted annually by the City of Ryde, aim to shine a light on the selfless contributions of individuals and groups who go above and beyond to support their community.

Other 2025 winners included Emma Richard, named Young Volunteer of the Year for her mentoring work with local youth organisations, and 4GreaterGood, led by Téa and Isla Costin, which received Volunteer Group of the Year for its community outreach programs including the impactful 100 Meals in 100 Minutes initiative.

In recognising all nominees, the City of Ryde thanked volunteers for their ongoing commitment to connection and compassion across the local area.
