Dr Patricia Koromvokis provides Australian presence at International Scientific Conference in Greece

The pioneering international scientific conference, organised by two of the most historic newspapers in the Greek press, “TO VIMA” and “TA NEA” and the department of their Historical Archive, took place on December 5 and 6 this year at the Faros of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) under the auspices of the General Secretariat of Hellenism Abroad and Public Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The focus of the conference was the Greek language and Greek literature, the digital Historical Archive of the newspapers “TO VIMA” and “TA NEA” (1922-2022) – which includes all the articles of these two newspapers from February 6, 1922, the day of the first publication of the “ELEFTHERON BIMA” newspaper, until today.

The conference was well attended by undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and postdoctoral students, as well as professors from 19 universities and linguistic institutions from Europe, the USA and Australia.

The members of the Scientific Committee were distinguished academics. The Chairman of the committee was the Emeritus Professor of Linguistics and a member of the Academy of Athens, Christoforos Charalambakis.

The honorary position of Secretary of the Scientific Committee was held by Dr Patricia Koromvokis, Lecturer in the Modern Greek Studies Program at Macquarie University representing the Greek diaspora.

In her brief address, Dr Koromvokis emphasised: “The Historical Archive of two of the most emblematic newspapers in the history of the Greek press ‘TO BIMA’ and ‘TA NEA’ is for the diaspora a bridge of communication with the homeland, a medium of enhancing the Greek diasporic cultural identity and a means of direct information for the Greeks abroad.”

The title of her presentation was “The use of foreign terms in journalistic discourse: a linguistic approach.”
