Battle of Crete commemorated at historic Garrison Church in Sydney

·

On Sunday, May 18, a solemn memorial service was held at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church “Garrison” at Millers Point to commemorate the Battle of Crete.

The commemoration is an enduring tradition that began over 40 years ago when Anzac families chose the historic church to honour the bravery of Allied soldiers and Greek civilians.

The service was attended by a distinguished gathering, including Vice Admiral Theodoros Mikropoulos and his delegation, the Consul General of Greece in Sydney Ioannis Mallikourtis, members of the 2/4th Australian Infantry Battalion Association, the Cretan Association of Sydney and NSW, and the Joint Committee for the Commemoration of the Battle of Crete and the Greek Campaign.

The ceremony began with the Greek National Anthem and a welcome from Reverend Thomas Elms, setting a respectful and reflective tone. Bible readings were delivered by Consul General Mallikourtis and Parriss McDougall, President of the 2/4th Australian Infantry Battalion Association.

Prayers were offered for members of the armed forces, and Peter Tsigounis, President of the Greek Returned Servicemen’s League of NSW, recited the Ode in tribute to those who served and sacrificed.

The service concluded with the singing of the Australian National Anthem, uniting the gathered communities in remembrance and shared history.
