At least two Greek-owned restaurants have won in the 2022 National Restaurant & Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence on Monday, November 28.

Four Greek-owned restaurants also earned finalist spots during the awards night held in Brisbane, Queensland.

The Awards recognise caterers, restaurants and cafes for their outstanding food and services across the year and includes an independent judging system with over 280 judges.

Winning gold in the ‘Contemporary Australian Restaurant’ category was Greek-owned One Penny Red in the Sydney suburb of Summer Hill.

“Thrilled to received awards for both One Penny Red and Vernon’s Bar. To our wonderful customers of nearly 10 years, we thank you!” the restaurant wrote in a Facebook post.

In the ‘Greek Restaurant’ category, Estia Henley Beach in South Australia took out the gold award, with Sydney Jaaks Restaurant and Bar claiming the silver. In third place was the Victorian restaurant, Mavs Greek Restaurant.

Greek desserts from Kalymnos Pastries in SA also won over judges in the ‘Patisseries/bakery/dessert bar’ category with the bakery winning the silver award.

In an Instagram post, owner George Diakomichalis said: “Being ranked number two by the powers of our industry is incredible and we are blessed.”
