Athens set to debut museum dedicated to opera legend, Maria Callas

·

The city of Athens has announced a museum honouring legendary opera singer Maria Callas on the centenary of her birth will open in the nation’s capital.

The museum is set to open in the summer of 2023 and will feature “valuable historical archives, rare live recordings, a unique collection of records and personal items” of Callas.

A scrapbook from Callas’ time in school, autographed books, sheet music, opera costumes, and pictures are all on display.

The late painters Alekos Fassianos, Dimitris Mytaras, and Panagiotis Tetsis were among the several Greek organisations and individual collectors that donated to the new museum.

Maria Callas, born Sophia Cecilia Anna Maria Kalogeropoulou, was born to Greek immigrant parents in New York in 1923 and lived in Athens from 1937 to 1945 after the separation of her parents.

Callas took vocal lessons at the National Conservatory before making her stage debut in 1941 with the Royal Opera of Athens.

After a distinguished career spanning more than three decades and a brief relationship with Greek businessman Aristotle Onassis, the opera icon passed away in Paris in 1977.
