Greek people clap from balconies to support healthworkers battling coronavirus

·

Thousands of people across Greece have come together in support of healthworkers battling coronavirus, clapping and cheering across balconies.

In a video shared by Twitter user @aimiliaiatrid, the streets of Athens are filled with applause as people cheer from their balconies. “We’ve come out, have you?” the user writes.

The move comes after the following message flooded social media: ‘We applaud for five minutes the people who are fighting for us. The health personnel. We want our applause to be heard at every hospital so they can take courage for the days to come.’

The wife of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Mareva Grabowski-Mitsotaki, also adopted the message.

Residents of Italy were the first to start the trend, with videos emerging of residents on balconies singing to show their gratitude to health personnel and their defiance of coronavirus.

In Spain, families on their balconies and others reaching out of their windows, clapped amid shouts of “Viva los medicos” or “Long Live Doctors!”

The power of social media came to play once again, with both nationwide events being organised in the locked-down countries through Twitter and Facebook.
