Memorial service held in Sydney for 113th anniversary of Ioannina’s liberation

On Sunday, 15 February 2026, the Panipirotiki Enosis of NSW held a memorial service marking the 113th anniversary of the Liberation of Ioannina at All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Belmore, Sydney.

The service was a day of remembrance, honouring the men and women who fought and made sacrifices for the freedom of Epirus in 1913.

The Divine Liturgy and memorial service were presided over by His Grace Bishop Christophoros of Kerasounta, representing His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia. Also in attendance was First Counsellor for Public Diplomacy at the Consulate of Greece in Sydney, Athanasios Lambrou.

Parishioners and guests participated in the service, during which His Grace spoke briefly on the historical significance of the Liberation of Ioannina.

Following the service, the Secretary of the Panipirotiki Enosis of NSW, Evangeleah Plakias, delivered a short historical address outlining the wars and struggles that led to the liberation of Ioannina and Epirus. She then invited distinguished guests to lay wreaths in remembrance.

Wreaths were laid by Mr Lambrou, representing the Consulate General of Greece in Sydney; Bill Kriezis, President of the Panipirotiki Enosis of NSW; Evangelos Vassos, President of the Philanthropic Association Nomos Prevezis; Maria Anthony, President of Pontoxeniteas NSW; Elena Matsouka, representing Symban Radio; and Ms Plakias, in memory of late members and friends.

The service concluded with refreshments served in the church hall.
