Zaroury hat trick fires Panathinaikos to emphatic Europa League win

·

Panathinaikos got off to a flying start in the Europa League group stage with a commanding 4-1 away win over Young Boys in Bern on Thursday night.

The Greens stormed into a three-goal lead inside the opening 20 minutes. Karol Swiderski opened the scoring before Moroccan forward Anass Zaroury struck twice in quick succession to put the visitors in firm control.

Young Boys briefly reduced the deficit on 25 minutes through Saidy Janko, but Zaroury completed his hat trick midway through the second half to secure all three points for Panathinaikos.

Meanwhile in Thessaloniki, PAOK were left frustrated after a goalless draw against Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv. The clash, played under heightened political sensitivities, was competitive and entertaining, with both sides carving out multiple chances but failing to find a breakthrough.

Looking ahead, Panathinaikos will host Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles next Thursday, while PAOK travel to Spain to face Celta Vigo.
