Former English teacher Vasilious “Bill” Kafataris, told police he did not think he was engaging in any “illegal” or “sexual” behaviour when he kissed a teenage girl, an incident that was recorded and presented to a jury.
The 56-year-old has pleaded guilty this year to two counts of sexually touching a person aged between 17 and 18 under special care. However, he has entered a not guilty plea regarding two counts of grooming a child for unlawful sexual activity, as well as charges of common assault and indecent assault of a minor under 16.
Three alleged victims include a young woman he is accused of having intercourse with him in his Bankstown apartment when she was 15.
The incidents allegedly spanned from January of 2013 to May, 2021.
The jury at Parramatta District Court saw CCTV footage of Kafataris greeting a 17-year-old girl at Bankstown train station with a kiss on two occasions in April 2021 before they arrived at his apartment and kissed on the lips outside the door.
The video depicted the same girl Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad detectives seized a photo of in his bedside drawer a month later when he was arrested following a search of his apartment.
During this search, police found a girl’s skirt to which Kafataris laughed at and declared it “could be anyone’s.’’ An adult sex toy, a laptop and women’s black lingerie were also seized.
“That’s just a prop,’’ Kafataris commented.
“It doesn’t belong to anyone, it’s just a prop. You’ll find a nurse’s one too.’’
The trial continues before Judge Alister Abadee.
